A brief introduction to Computational Granular Mechanics: DEM

In this seminar, there will be a brief theoretical introduction, as a class, to the Method of Discrete Elements (DEM) based on its first and simplest version (2D), published by Cundall and Strack in 1979. DEM, was created to perform numerical / computational simulation of the mechanical interactions between «grains» of granular materials, such as soils, where that each individual is considered as a solid that is elastically deformed and has a frictional behavior when interacting with other individuals of the same species. At the end of the seminar, there will be a brief talk about: the state of the art of the method, what is to be done? and some applications as well as possible applications in science, engineering and industry.
